Creating First Impressions With Appetizers

March 2, 2012

First impressions make last impressions, the first is always what people are most likely to remember and even the smallest touches can make your event an extremely memorable one for your guests. They best thing to create this extraordinary and unforgettable first expression is to greet them with an interesting and delicious appetizer. There are two ways you can do this; either by having them passed by servers or by setting up ‘party trays’ where they will be displayed for self-serve purposes. There are some appetizers that are not suitable to be passed however and these include fried calamari for instance. These are better held for serving at tables.

The decision process for choosing appetizers can without a doubt be hard. You will have quite a lot of items to choose from and so making selections alone can be pretty overwhelming. The most important thing that you should allow to influence your selection is your budget. Other considerations include the type of cuisine that will be used at the event such as the main course and the guests that will be at the party. Once you have all of that down your next option is to choose whether the appetizers will be prepared in house or if you will be hiring a catering service. If you are strapped for time and have a limited budget you may want to choose appetizers you can do yourself or may want to purchase appetizer trays that are sold at your local grocery store.

If you are serving a main course at your event you want your appetizer to be similar where cuisine is concerned to the main course item. You still however want to provide your guests with texture and contrast in their meal. There are also some types of appetizers that can be used with a variety of cuisines. You also want to ensure that your appetizers will pair well with any beverage including wines that you may be serving.

Your event plays an important role for what will be served as well. If you are planning a bridal shower you cannot serve the same type of appetizer as you would for a football tailgating party unless for some weird reason that was the theme of your bridal shower. On the matter of themes, many occasions are now being themed and if you have a theme for your event this may influence the type of appetizer served as well as the way in which they are served. If children will be at the event you need to ensure that you have kid friendly appetizers as well to ensure that your young guests feel welcomed and can enjoy the festivities as well.

If you plan to use a catering service you must know that you will have a lack of control over the final taste of the items to be served. A lot can happen that can change the taste even a little from what you sampled. Catering however is a lot less hassle for you and it allows you to provide food for your guests and be able to socialize with them and enjoy the gathering as well.
